When I was a kid, I could not realize the deep meaning of tolerance, so I found tolerance as a word in the dictionary to define it. As I was just a little child, I could only understand the basic idea of this word, and there was a curious idea buried in my heart. Tolerance is a cheerful open-mindedness, and it brings incredible gifts to others. Tolerance is a profound term as people can define the deep implication when they go alone with others. Tolerance is a noble character because people can not recognize it entirely.
To be tolerant towards other people is an enjoyable and cheerful thing. When I first time went to a very traditional temple with my parents to make a vow to Buddha for studying, the first thing that attracted my eyes was a small special Buddha. This Buddha was really extraordinary as it was smiling with its mouth open. This kind of Buddha in Buddhism is the symbol of happiness and luck, and when I watched it, I felt very relaxed and happy. It seemed that this Buddha could tolerate and forgive anything in the whole world and never being mad. In addition, at that time, I understood why people often reminded themselves to be tolerant to others. As tolerance also means the great mind someone has, human beings needs to keep initiative mind to deal with the relationships with others. Therefore, it’s crucial for individuals to maintain a pleasant heart to show the greatest attitude toward others even if the latter gets something wrong.
Tolerance contains a recondite meaning as it can help others define whether someone has inner depth or not. For instance, William McKinley was a president who insisted tolerance on political opponents in American history. Once, there was one representative who was dissatisfied with him on employment issues, and the former abused him in the parliament. However, McKinley quietly listened to his sentences, stood up, and said: “According to your identity, you are not qualified to do it to me, but I will not do anything for revenge to you at all; I think I need to tell you my reasons.” This member was ashamed after he listened to McKinley’s reasons. Then, there was no voice of opposition any more. That was the authority of tolerance. If McKinley used his identity of president to argue with other members, the results certainly would not run so smoothly, and nobody would be convinced. Consequently, McKinley’s tolerance, which could be said to make concessions, was his strategy and wisdom. This story tells people that they should be accepting and flexible while solving some troublesome things in order to bring a win-win situation. We have to respect the knowledge and experience of anyone who has their own view of life, and actively absorb the beneficial parts. Therefore, it’s very important for individuals to train deep inner value based on being tolerant towards others as possible as they can.
Lastly, tolerance is also a noble virtue as it reflects someone’s characteristics. When somebody gets inconsistencies in other people and their views, the only thing they need to do is to be patient and lenient. Here is an example happened so far around me. Several days before, my friends and I were going to finish a project. However, when we decided to distribute jobs, a tension existed. As I was the leader of the group, I needed to listen to all of our group members’ opinions and conclude them. Nevertheless, they were all showing dissatisfactory about the job distribution. Finally, I calmed down and became patient to listen to their own ideas, and I made a better decision in the end. As I didn’t force them to follow my decision, the result made everyone happy. It’s an obvious reflection of tolerance in respecting and considering others’ thoughts. Thus, tolerant people can get more respect in public.
In summary, as tolerant is really a wonderful virtue in the society, people should pay more attention to this morality in any conditions in their lives. Only if someone is tolerant towards others, others will give the same gifts to you.
